Libyan witness tells euronews: there are people dying
Pro-Muammar Gaddafi protesters have been seen out in force in Tripoli in the few images being allowed out of the country on what government critics called their ‘day of rage.’ The pro-government demonstrators were keen to show support for their leader, in power for more than 40 years. But elsewhere, in other cities, anti-Gaddafi demonstrators took to the streets, leading to clashes with security forces. Deaths and injuries have been reported in several areas, but the information is difficult to verify because of telecommunications restrictions. US-based group Human Rights Watch claims at least 24 people have been killed in street violence in recent days. “The people are chanting ‘out with the regime’, people want to overthrow the regime,” one witness told euronews by phone. “The government and the Baltagia militia have guns and tear gas. There are people dying. They have cut internet connections, all telephone networks. They’re trying to stop this revolution. “There are some dead in the city of Benghazi, Trablos, Jadabiya, Beida and Ziltan,” she added. “The situation is very difficult. And they are forbidding journalists from covering the protests.”
